These credit card numbers are used to identify the issuer. Also, this helps in preventing thefts because it is not possible to guess anyone credit card number.

The first 6 digits of any credit card are used to identify the issuer or bank. This 6-digit code is also known as Bank Identification Number [BIN] number of your credit card. For example, Visa cards always begin with 4. Thus, you can easily identify if the card is issued by Visa or not.

How to Validate your Credit Card Number

Every credit card has a unique Credit card number. This credit card number is used to validate your transactions. There is no need to use any complex algorithm to check the validity of your credit card. You can easily check the validity of your card with a simple math calculation. First, you must understand how these card numbers are assigned.

As we have already discussed before, these card numbers are not randomly generated. Rather, they follow some similar looking algorithm.

The first 6 digits of your card number are known as Bank Identification Number (BIN). BIN number is used to identify the card’s issuer name. Some examples of BIN number are:

Visa: Visa credit card numbers always start with 4.

MasterCard: MasterCard credit card numbers always start with 51 or 55.

Discover: Discover credit card numbers always start with 6011,644 or 65.

American Express card: American Express credit card numbers always start with 34 or 37.

The 7th and the following digits are used to identify the cardholder’s account number. The final digit of your credit card number is known as the checksum. It is used to validate your credit card number using Luhn’s algorithm. Now, let’s talk about how to check the validity of your credit card number. There are four methods using which you can check the validity of your card number.

1. Luhn Algorithm

You can check whether your credit card number is valid or not using the Luhn algorithm. For example, suppose that the card number is: 4417 1234 5678 9113

Step 1: First, drop the last digit from your card number. This digit is known as the digit sum.

Original number: 4417 1234 5678 9113

Modified number: 4417 1234 5678 911

Step 2: Now reverse your credit card number.

Original number: 4417 1234 5678 911

Reversed number: 119 8765 4321 7144

Step 3: Now, multiply all the odd positions by 2. If the result is higher than 9, then subtract that number by 9.

Reversed number: 119 8765 4321 7144

Modified number: 219 8561 4321 5154

Step 4: Add all the digits of the modified number.

Add digits: 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 + 6 + 1 + 4 + 3 + 2 +1 + 5 + 1 + 5 +4 = 53.

Step 5: Now, use Sum%10 to find out the Modulo 10 of the sum. The result must be equal to the digit sum of your credit card number.

53 modulo 10 = 3 (last digit of your credit card number).

2. Major Industry Identifier (MII)

The first digit of your credit card is known as Major Industry Identifier. It is used to identify the major industry of the card issuer.

• 1, 2: If your card number starts with 1 or 2 then its major industry is Airlines.

• 3: If your card number starts with 3 then it is issued by American Express, JCB or Diner’s Club.

• 4: If your card number starts with 4 then it is issued by Visa or Electron.

• 5: If your card number starts with 5 then it is issued by MasterCard.

• 6: If your card number starts with 4 then it is issued by Discover Card and China UnionPay.

• 7: If your card number starts with 7 then its major industry is Petroleum.

• 8: If your card number starts with 8 then its major industry is Telecommunications

• 9: If your card number starts with 9 then its major industry is Natural Assignment

3. Issuer identifier number (IIN)

The first six digits of your card number are known as issuer identifier number (IIN). It is used to identify the credit card issuer. It is also known as Bank Identification Number (BIN). Some examples of BIN number are:

Visa: Visa credit card numbers always start with 4.

MasterCard: MasterCard credit card numbers always start with 51 or 55.

Discover: Discover credit card numbers always start with 644, 6011 or 605.

American Express card: American Express credit card numbers always start with 34 or 37.

4. Primary Account Number (PAN)

PAN or Primary Account Number is a 14 digit number which is used to identify the account holder’s name. As we have already discussed, the first digits of your credit card number are used to identify the issuer of your credit card. The following 14-16 digits are used to identify the customer’s account number.

How Mod 10 or Modulus 10 is performed on Validating a Valid Credit Card?

The Luhn algorithm is also known as the Modulus 10 algorithm. The Luhn algorithm was created by Hans Peter in 1954. It is a simple formula which is used to validate many identification numbers, such as IMEI number, credit card number and debit card number. Most of the online free credit card generators use this algorithm to generate fake credit card numbers.
